Metro Wire Staff

The Portage Co. public shooting range will be open daily for the fall season beginning Oct. 23.

Portage Co. Parks Director Ryan Rose announced hours of operation on Monday. They follow:

  • Oct. 23-30, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
  • Oct. 31-Nov. 19, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

The Dewey Shooting Range, located six miles north of Stevens Point, is just one of 24 areas managed by the Portage County Parks Department. The 319-acre area has a public shooting range and a public hunting area. The range is adjacent to the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources’ 6,000-acre Dewey Marsh.

Range fees are $5 per person.

The range was developed in 1986 as a safe facility for firearms target practice and field archery.

The county offers ranges from 5 yards to 200 yards that accommodate handguns, shotguns, rifles, and muzzleloaders. An archery range that includes both 3-D and bag targets is also available.

Possession or discharge of any fully automatic gun or machine gun, or loading or discharging any firearm deemed unsafe by the range master, or loading or discharging any firearm with armor-piercing or incendiary ammunition is prohibited.

Young shooters (ages 10-15 years of age) are only allowed on the range with a parent or legal guardian.
