Police & Sheriff calls, June 22-23
June 22
Hit & run: A 22-year-old man was arrested at 2:43 a.m. after striking a car on the 1300 block of Sixth Ave. and then fleeing the area. He was also cited for open intoxicants in a vehicle, possession of THC, and possession of drug paraphernalia.
Busted, literally: Police were called to the 1600 block of Fourth Ave. at 9:16 a.m. when someone reported a window had been damaged sometime overnight.
Homeless problems: Police responded to Franciscans, 1000 Main St., at 9:29 a.m., when a caller reported homeless people had left personal property in the doorway. Officers disposed of the items.
More homeless problems: Police observed a 26-year-old homeless man loitering in the Pfiffner band shell and using the city’s power outlets at 9:31 a.m. The man was moved along.
Illegal dumping: A 46-year-old woman called police to the 1500 block of Maria Dr. at 10:22 p.m. to complain that someone was leaving garbage in her yard. The woman said she’d install surveillance cameras.
Complainer: A 25-year-old woman called police to the 1600 block of Illinois Ave. at 6:48 p.m. to inquire about her neighbor’s exterior surveillance cameras.
Anonymous snitch: Someone called police to complain that a group of kids was playing with battery-operated toy trucks in the park, and intentionally driving them in front of vehicles. When questioned, the kids told officers that the caller was actually speeding through the parking lot and nearly hit one of the kids.
Threats: A 37-year-old man called police to the 2600 block of Blaine St. at 9:25 p.m. to report ongoing threats from a 44-year-old man, and requested extra patrol of the area.
Super creepy: A woman called police to the 1400 block of Torun Rd. at 11:56 p.m. to report she kept hearing her name called from the nearby woods. The woman has a history of being followed by her ex, but officers searched the area and found nothing suspicious.
June 23
Not a gunshot: Police responded to the 1000 block of Whiting Ave. at 12:08 a.m. when a neighbor reported hearing a gunshot by a neighbor with a history of making threats. Officers knew he had access to firearms and had “issues” with a recent employer, so they conducted a high-risk response to the man’s home. He was temporarily detained while officers investigated. They found the man had merely set off a firework in the street.
Homeless: People found two men, ages 39 and 57, sleeping at the Lincoln Center, 1519 Water St., at 7:03 a.m. The two were moved along and warned that they could not sleep there.
Shouldn’t be driving: Police made contact with a 63-year-old man on the 1900 block of Madison St. at 7:44 a.m. after receiving numerous complaints that he’d been drinking all day at a local bar before driving. He was advised to find a ride home.
