Police & Sheriff calls, Aug. 28-31

August 28

Loitering: Police stopped to check on the welfare of a 45-year-old man in the tunnel on the 1000 block of Main St. near the downtown library at 1:03 a.m. The man agreed to pack up his belongings and move along.

Assault: Deputies responded to a reported assault on the 100 block of Main St. North in Amherst at 1:45 a.m. The parties involved were separated for the night.

Party-blocker: A 43-year-old man called deputies to check on his home, located on the 400 block of McDill Ave., while he was out of town. Upon arrival, deputies learned a 19-year-old woman was concerned that her brother, whose age was not listed, planned to hold a party while their father was gone. The woman locked her brother out of the house, and the brother left for the night.

Political: A 64-year-old man called police to report someone stole a political sign in his yard on the 2700 block of Clark St. at 5:03 a.m.

Crash: A 43-year-old man was cited for unsafe lane deviation and operating a motor vehicle without insurance following a two-vehicle collision near Main and Phillips streets at 10:17 a.m.

Ousted: Police were called to an apartment on the 1900 block of Water St. at 11:18 a.m. after a landlord reported an evicted tenant, a 39-year-old man, was still in the residence.

Harassment: A 32-year-old woman called police at 8 a.m. to report a 46-year-old man in Marathon Co. was texting her, which violated the conditions of three open cases against the man.

So busted: Police arrested a 40-year-old man on a charge of bail-jumping following a traffic stop on the 1200 block of Badger Ave. at 12:12 p.m. The man was also cited for operating while revoked, speeding, and operating a motor vehicle without proof of insurance.

Gone to pot: Police were called to a subsidized housing unit on the 600 block of John’s Dr. after a tenant reported smelling marijuana in the hallway. Police notified the city’s housing authority for a follow-up.

Repeat offender: Police found a 47-year-old man sleeping behind a business on the 1600 block of Academy Ave. at 3:46 p.m. The man has a long history of police contacts and has been banned from several city parks and businesses. The man was told to move along.

Drunk: Police were called to the 1500 block of Pinecrest Ave. at 4:40 p.m. after someone reported a highly-intoxicated man causing a disturbance there. At 6:06 p.m., he was escorted out of St. Michael’s Hospital after causing a disturbance there, and he was asked not to come back. The man has a lengthy history of police contacts, usually while he is intoxicated.

Bean bag burn: Police and fire departments were called to a home on the 1100 block of Prentice St. at 8:59 p.m. after someone reported three men, ages 20 and 21, were burning a bean bag in the yard. The fire was out upon arrival and the residents were spoken with.

Light-runner: A 22-year-old man was cited for driving through a red light at Second and Portage streets at 11:52 p.m.

August 29

Sleeper: Police located a 39-year-old man sleeping in the grass on the west side of the former Shopko building at 1200 Main St. at 6:50 a.m. The man said he was okay and would move along.

Interesting: Police were alerted to several suspicious incidents near downtown, including mattresses located in the area, a pallet of bricks moved from the rear of the Fox Theater to SPPD, and a gathering of people near Washington and Meadow, all wearing matching jackets. No further details were immediately released.

Laying down: A 47-year-old man, who has had regular contacts with police in recent months, was found laying on the ground in front of Tokyo Steakhouse at Division St. North and Academy Ave. at 10:05 a.m. The man told police he would move along.

Crash: Police cited a 28-year-old woman for violating a red traffic signal near County Trunk HH and Business Park Dr. after rear-ending another motorist at 1:44 p.m. Minor damage was reported.

Bad friend: A 35-year-old man called deputies to the 2100 block of Rice St. at 1:49 p.m. to report a woman, 31, had destroyed several of his personal items and lost his cat.

‘Bear-y’ interesting: A 38-year-old man called deputies to the 7200 block of Jacqueline Lake Lane North in Custer at 3:31 a.m. to report he saw what looked like “a bear outside that was stuck in a port-a-potty.” When deputies arrived they found the shape the man saw was actually a Whitetail dear decoy in a yard.

Bones: A 38-year-old man reported to deputies that he’d found suspicious bones near Emmons Creek Rd. and Stratton Ln. in Almond at 3:09 p.m. The deputy determined they were animal bones.

Squatter: A 62-year-old man called police to the Four Seasons Mobile Home Park, 1430 Torun Rd., at 6:17 p.m. after he reportedly found another person living in a trailer home he purchased there.

Almost broke in: A 45-year-old man called police to his home on the 700 block of Soo Marie Ave. at 8:54 p.m. to report another man, age 37, attempted to break into his home. The suspect was gone by the time police arrived.

Car v motorcycle: Police cited an 18-year-old man with failure to yield after he collided with a 42-year-old motorcyclist near Maria Dr. and Isadore St. Minor injuries were reported.

August 30

Underagers: Two men, both age 18, were cited for underage drinking near Ellis and Division streets at 12:42 a.m.

Open intoxicants: A 26-year-old man was cited for possession of THC and having an open intoxicant in his vehicle during a traffic stop near County Trunk HH and County Trunk R at 1:16 a.m.

Passed out: Police were called to check on a 21-year-old man passed out in the bathroom of Graffiti’s, 912 Main St., at 2:02 a.m. The man was “highly intoxicated,” according to the police report, but had friends with him and was taken home safely.

OWI: Police arrested a 44-year-old man for his sixth OWI offense on the 3300 block of Church St. at 2:56 a.m.

Assault: A 29-year-old man was arrested for strangulation/suffocation, battery, and criminal damage to property, following an attack on his roommate on the 800 block of Clark St. at 2 a.m.

Sleeper: A known 47-year-old man was found sleeping in front of a building on the 1600 block of Academy Ave. at 11:02 a.m. The man had received several warnings in the past, and was cited for trespassing. The man was found on the property at 4:05 p.m. the same day, causing a disturbance while intoxicated, and was arrested for disorderly conduct.

Bad husband: A 30-year-old man was arrested on charges of disorderly conduct, domestic abuse, and sending obscene email messages containing explicit images of his wife, from the 3400 block of Church St. at 9 a.m.

Scared: A 56-year-old woman called police to her home on the 200 block of Pine Bluff Rd. at 9:55 p.m. because she was “scared because someone was knocking on her door.” No further details were immediately released.

Busted: A 21-year-old man was cited for allowing underage alcohol consumption during a loud party on the 1100 block of Prentice St. at 11:15 p.m. Police reported “50 to 60” people at the party when they arrived.

August 31

Slasher: Police were called to the 1800 block of Madison St. at 2:46 a.m. after a 20-year-old man allege that other people, a 20-year-old man, and a 21-year-old woman, slashed the tires on his vehicle. The two suspects admitted no wrongdoing.
