Police & Sheriff calls, Aug. 10-12

August 10

Suspicious: Police were called to the 200 block of Prentice St. North at 8:30 a.m. when a caller reported a man trying to get into people’s vehicles parked there. The man, 63, claimed he was only standing next to his son’s vehicle and that his son was with him, but the man was standing alone. He declined any assistance.

Verbal: Police were called to the 1600 block of College Ave. at 12:14 p.m. when a caller reported a disturbance. Two people were separated following a verbal disturbance.

Bad roomie: A 63-year-old man called police to the 2200 block of Madison St. at 1:11 p.m. to report that his roommate had stolen his wallet and cut his bike lock. Officers determined that the wallet may have been lost, and that the roommate may have taken the bicycle due to a misunderstanding in ownership.

Car wash disaster: Police responded to R-Store, 5485 Hwy. 10 East, at 1:36 p.m. when an employee reported that three young men entered the car wash and removed several panels, potentially damaging the facility. The car wash would be closed until it could be inspected.

Homelessness: Police moved along several homeless people from the downtown bus stop at 3:01  p.m.

Low-battery life: A 38-year-old man was arrested from a roof construction project at SPASH at 3:53 p.m. when his GPS battery died. He was on probation and required to keep the GPS battery charged.

Road rage history: A 21-year-old woman called police to Rogers and Briggs streets at 3:55 p.m. to complain that another driver yelled at and spat at her when she slowed down at an intersection. The motorist in question, who was not identified in the blotter, has a long history of road rage complaints.

E-bikers: Police were called to County Rd. R and Commons Circle in Plover at 4:07 when someone complained about minors riding e-bikes in the road and doing wheelies. An officer was unable to locate them.

Theft: A 45-year-old man called police to the 1700 block of Church St. at 4:33 p.m. to report that someone had stolen his overnight bag from his vehicle.

Shoplifter: A 24-year-old man was cited for retail theft from Target, 5300 Hwy. 10 East, at 5:08 p.m. No word on what was taken.

Gossip: A 49-year-old man called police to the 700 block of Bukolt Ave. at 5:45 p.m. to report that a neighbor was “talking about him and making false statements about him to the landlord.” Officers determined that no crime had occurred.

Public peeing: Police were called to the 800 block of First St. at 6:59 p.m. when a neighbor complained that an 87-year-old man was urinating in his front yard. The man said he “does urinate publicly” and had been living on the porch of the residence. He was then asked to leave the property.

Medical emergency: Police and deputies responded to a suspicious vehicle at Centerpoint Dr. and Water St. at 7:37 p.m., when a woman appeared to have passed out while driving. Officers determined the woman was having a low blood sugar attack, secured her vehicle, and contacted EMS.

Sexual assault: Police took a report of asexual assault at 9:35 p.m.

August 11

Vagrancy: Police were dispatched to a vagrancy call at Sherman Ave. and Whiting Ave. at 8:50 a.m., but no information was included in the blotter.

Break-ins: Police were notified of two break-ins over the past two nights at 9:10 a.m. at Ox Paper Tube, 2116 Wood St. Nothing was stolen, but some things were moved out of place.

Homelessness: A group of homeless people was moved along at Mead Park at 9:16 a.m.

Theft: Police were called to Festival Foods, 1600 Academy Ave., at 1:36 p.m., when a caller reported the theft of lottery tickets.

So busted: Police arrested a 44-year-old man for operating after revocation and failure to install an IID during a traffic stop at Linwood Ave. and Ferndale Dr. at 2:45 p.m.

Can’t sleep here: Police were called to the 5600 block of Jefferson St. at 3:19 p.m. when someone reported a homeless man sleeping in the area. The man, 33, was moved along.

Overreaction: A 36-year-old woman became upset and caused a disturbance at Firehouse Subs, 200 Division St., when her order was made incorrectly. Employees called the police when the woman became combative, throwing a soda cup at an employee and hitting her in the head. The woman, whose identity was redacted from the blotter, was gone when officers arrived, but charges were forwarded to the Portage Co. DA’s office, and a warrant was issued for the woman’s arrest.

August 12

Domestic: Police and deputies responded to the 5300 block of Old Highway 18 Rd. at 8:20 a.m. for a domestic disturbance.

Trespasser: Police were called to the 3300 block of Minnesota Ave. at 9:04 a.m. when a 36-year-old woman was trespassing on the property. The woman was moved along.

Homelessness: Police were called to Olympia Restaurant, 200 Division St., at 10:14 a.m. for a homeless man loitering on the property. The man, 23, was given a bus ticket back to his hometown.

Trespasser: Police were called to the downtown bus stop at Main and Strongs at 10:41 a.m. when someone complained about a homeless 49-year-old man loitering in the area. The man was moved along and told he would be cited if he returned.

Who knows: Police were called to the 100 block of Forest St. North at 1:27 p.m. for some kind of disturbance, but no details were included in the blotter.

Maniac: Someone called 911 at 7 p.m. to report a “shirtless male running in the lane of traffic” near Division and Park streets, but officers could not locate the man when they arrived on the scene.

Nearly hit: Police were called to the 3000 block of Michigan Ave. at 10:01 p.m. when a caller reported a disturbance involving a man who was nearly hit by a car. The caller and two men were arrested, but the blotter doesn’t say why.

Video game drama: Police responded to the 900 block of Shaurette St. at 12:48 a.m. when a disturbance broke out between a 34-year-old man and a 32-year-old woman. Apparently, the man was playing a video game that the woman did not approve of. Additional details were redacted from the blotter.

Homeless: An employee of 13th Floor Canteen, 1109 Park St., called police at 4:01 a.m. to report a homeless man sitting on a bench in the back parking lot. The officer couldn’t find the man upon arrival, but he did find luggage, blankets, a wagon with food, and miscellaneous clothing items. No one was nearby, and there was no ID within the items, so they were disposed of.
