Plover Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #10262 and Plover American Legion Post #543 conducted a small, socially-distanced joint ceremony on Wednesday.

The ceremony was held Nov. 11 in observance of Veterans Day to honor all servicemen and servicewomen who have fought for or are fighting for the county.

Plover Legion Post Commander John Herek welcomed attendees on a chilly morning and presented the Veterans Day message:

“Veterans serve with honor. They serve to make lives better for others. They preserve our freedom. . . . We can be secure at home because we have brave warriors protecting us in the air, at sea, on land and beyond our atmosphere. . . those who wish us harm sling away in fear of the Coast Guard cutter, the Navy aircraft carrier, the Air Force fighter squadron, the Marine Corps fire team or the Army infantry squad on patrol. . . All of our Veterans have protected our democracy, our freedom, our way of life. We are grateful for their service. . . their willingness to die defending this nation. Today we honor them and pay tribute to them. . . and we say ‘Thank you for what you have done for our country.’ ”

The Plover VFW Rifle Squad fired a 3-volley rifle salute and the ceremony concluded with the sounding of Taps.

Veterans Day marks the anniversary of the Armistice that ended World War I, which formally took place at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918.
