STEVENS POINT — The University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point’s Allen F. Blocher Planetarium will host a series of free shows this December, providing an opportunity to explore the night sky and beyond.
The planetarium will hold public programs at 2 p.m. each Sunday. Each show lasts about an hour and includes a 25-minute presentation on the current night sky in Central Wisconsin, highlighting visible stars, constellations, and planets. While the events are free, donations are welcome to support the continuation of the programs.
Upcoming shows include:
- Dec. 8, 2 p.m. — “MUSICA: Why is the Universe Beautiful?” Explore how art, music, and mathematics contribute to the beauty of the cosmos.
- Dec. 15, 2 p.m. — “Season of Light” Learn about the connections between winter, light, and holiday traditions around the world, as well as the stars in our expansive universe.
On Dec. 15, a special Junior Scientist program, “Moles: What is Out There?” will run from 3:40 to 4:10 p.m., following a 3 p.m. book reading session. This event is held in collaboration with the UW-Stevens Point Museum of Natural History.
Planetarium seating is available on a first-come, first-served basis for up to 55 attendees. Groups of eight or more may schedule private showings of any program by calling 715-346-2208 or completing an online request form. Fees apply for group bookings.
The Allen F. Blocher Planetarium is located on the second floor of the Science Building at 2001 Fourth Ave., Stevens Point. Parking is free in all university lots after 7 p.m. and on weekends, with Lot D behind the building offering convenient access.
For those interested in stargazing, sessions will be held Monday through Wednesday from 8:30 to 10 p.m. at Colman Field, located at Maria and Reserve streets. The outdoor viewings are weather-dependent and will occur only if the skies are clear and the temperature is above 15 degrees Fahrenheit.
