Photo of the Day: That’s what 21 inches will do

Metro Wire Staff

The roof of the former Copps grocery store, 5657 U.S. Highway 10 East, collapses under the weight of heavy snow that fell over the weekend.

According to the National Weather Service, 20.7 inches of heavy, wet snow fell in Stevens Point April 14-16, with wind gusts topping out at 49 mph at the Stevens Point Municipal Airport, making it close to a record-breaking storm for the month of April, and creating a lot of chaos.

The Portage Co. Sheriff’s Office responded to over 200 calls for service; so did Stevens Point police. Plover police responded to 44 calls for help from motorists who were either stuck in driveways or on roads. All three departments reported squad cars getting stuck in the snow.

Stevens Point firefighters also took on an extra load during the storm, with a combined total of 33 EMS calls and 16 fire responses between Friday and Sunday. SPFD also had extra personnel on duty over the weekend, and a plow truck responded in tandem to most of the department’s calls to keep routes clear.

The NWS has issues another winter weather advisory, this one from 1-9 p.m. on Wednesday with two-to-four inches of snow anticipated. Slick roadways and reduced visibility are expected.
