Interim Stevens Point Police Chief Tom Zenner, Mayor Mike Wiza, and Stevens Point Fire Chief Robert Finn bow their heads in prayer while Pastor David Ficken gives an invocation at a Tuesday morning arson conference.
Stevens Point hosted the Wisconsin Chapter of the International Association of Arson Investigators (IAAI) at the Holiday Inn Convention Center, 1001 Amber Ave., on June 8. About 50 people were in attendance.
Ficken is the pastor of Beautiful Savior Lutheran Church and is a member of the Portage Co. Chaplains program, which provides counseling and religious services and support to law enforcement, fire, and EMS personnel during difficult times.
Sheriff Mike Lukas was also a guest at the event, along with several local law enforcement and firefighters.
Zenner has previously said that local police and firefighters have solid working relationships when it comes to investigating fires, but officers should expect to receive additional training to help spot suspected arson.
