Heavy equipment tears up the old pavement at Division and Briggs streets on Tuesday as crews break ground on the northern stage of the Business 51 reconstruction project in Stevens Point.

The current phase has closed the highway between Briggs Street and about 250 feet north of Franklin Street and is expected to continue through mid-August.

The work is part of a roughly $9.9 million reconstruction of the northern section of Business 51 between Briggs Street and North Point Drive.

By the time the nine-stage project wraps up in fall 2027, the corridor will feature a rebuilt roadway, upgraded underground utilities, new street lighting and safety improvements for drivers, bicyclists and pedestrians.

Businesses along the construction zone remain open throughout the project.
