Stevens Point Firefighter/Paramedic Ethan Przybylski, Fire Chief Robert Finn, and Stevens Point Assistant Police Chief Robert Kussow man the grill during a Guns N’ Hoses fundraising event on Aug. 7.

The cookout and emergency vehicle display was held in lieu of an annual cops-versus-firefighters softball game, held at Bukolt Park each year until COVID-19 put a damper on the fun, forcing a cancelation in 2020.

The cookout took place on a rainy Saturday at Pfiffner Pioneer Park, with members of local veteran service organizations, the Portage Co. Sheriff’s Office, police departments in Stevens Point and Plover, and SPFD, serving lunch, taking donations, and talking with the public.

Proceeds from the event will benefit the Portage County Allied Veteran Council Veterans Relief Fund, which helps veterans in need of financial assistance. All the money stays in Portage Co., according to Sheriff Mike Lukas.

Lukas said donations for Guns N’ Hoses can also be made at the Stevens Point Fire Department or any local law enforcement agency.

Guns N’ Hoses has raised $130,000 for the Never Forgotten Honor Flight, the Portage Co. Veterans Emergency Services Fund, and other local veteran causes since 2014.
