STEVENS POINT — Stevens Point firefighter/paramedic Megan Meyers returns eight ducklings to their mother after she and two coworkers rescued the brood from a storm drain early Monday.
The Stevens Point Fire Department was called to the 1000 block of Third Street at about 6 a.m. after someone reported the ducklings had fallen through a storm drain grate.
Getting them out wasn’t as simple as lifting the cover. The grate was stuck, so Lt. Justin Thomson used a sledgehammer to help loosen it while firefighter/paramedic Luke Fourness worked a Halligan tool underneath until the heavy cover finally gave way.
Meyers then reached in with a net to lift the ducklings to safety, where they immediately scurried over to their mother, who had been nervously waiting nearby the entire time.
