One dead in Sixth Ave. garage fire

Stevens Point police confirmed one person has died in Wednesday night a garage fire.

Metro Fire crews were called to 608 Sixth Ave. at 6:47 p.m. According to Fire Chief Robert Finn, a detached garage near the home was fully engulfed when crews arrived. The smoke plume was seen for over a mile to the north and east, and a haze of smoke settled over several blocks around the area.

“We can confirm one person has died,” said Assistant Police Chief Tom Zenner. The body was located inside the garage and has been tentatively identified, he added.

No other injuries were reported. The neighboring home suffered exterior damage only, Finn said, but the garage was a total loss.

Stevens Point, Plover, and Hull firefighters all responded to the scene, along with Stevens Point EMS. The Portage County Humane Society also responded to the scene, but Finn could not immediately confirm if an animal was in need of assistance.

Several city police detectives were also on the scene to assist with the investigation. Finn and Zenner both said their respective investigations continue.
