One dead following Plover crash

By Brandi Makuski

A 74-year-old woman was killed on Tuesday following a two-vehicle crash in the Town of Plover.

According to a news release from the Portage Co. Sheriff’s Office, Plover resident Sharon Nieman drove through a stop sign at the intersection of Coolidge Ave. and Hwy 54 at about 3:15 p.m. on April 24, when she was struck by a motorist traveling west on Hwy. 54.

The other driver, a 46-year-old woman, was driving SUV when Nieman’s vehicle crossed her path. Nieman’s Dodge pickup truck was struck “at or around highway speed”, the news release said.

Emergency crews were already nearby for an unrelated call and responded to the scene within about two minutes. Despite lifesaving measures, Nieman was pronounced dead at St. Michael’s Hospital.

The other drive was transported to the hospital by ambulance with non-life-threatening injuries. Her condition was not immediately known.

Crews closed one lane of traffic for about 90 minutes while they cleared the scene. The cause of the crash is still under investigation by the sheriff’s office and the Portage Co. Coroner.

Plover Fire and Police departments, Portage Co. EMSĀ and the Wisconsin State Patrol also responded to the scene.
