Olaf Gregory Hammerstad, 74
Olaf Gregory Hammerstad, 74, of Stevens Point, died peacefully at home July 11, 2026, surrounded by his family.
Born March 11, 1952, in Stevens Point, he was a lifelong resident who took great pride in the community where he was raised. In 1972, he answered the call to serve his country in the U.S. Navy as a gunner’s mate, carrying that sense of duty throughout his life.
On July 28, 1973, he married the love of his life, Donna. Together they shared more than 52 years of marriage, building a life centered on love and family. Their marriage was an example of devotion through every season of life.
For more than 30 years, he worked as a semitruck driver, known for his strong work ethic, reliability and dedication to providing for his family. Above all else, he was a devoted husband, loving father and proud grandfather. Each family member’s life was forever enriched by his love, wisdom and steady presence. He will be remembered for his strength, his sense of humor and his strong-willed personality that those who loved him knew so well.
Survivors include his wife, Donna; three children, James (Carrie) Hammerstad, Jeff (Noelle) Hammerstad and Jennifer (Adam) Bicknase; seven grandchildren, Noah, Anthony, Bridgette, Kaleb, Thomas, Mekaillah and Landon; one sister, Phyllis Mason; and many other loving family members and dear friends.
He was preceded in death by his grandmother, Daisy Faber; his parents, Olaf and Wilma Hammerstad; and two sisters, Alvon Brandt and Bonita Syms.
The family extends its heartfelt gratitude to the compassionate staff at Moments Hospice and the caregivers from Home Instead. Their support, comfort and compassion allowed him to remain at home, surrounded by his family, and will never be forgotten.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, July 17, at Shuda Funeral Chapel, 3200 Stanley St., Stevens Point. Visitation will be at the funeral home from 10 a.m. until the time of service. Burial will follow at Forest Cemetery in Stevens Point.
