Not this year: Walk Wisconsin canceled
Metro Wire Staff
Active Portage County on Monday announced its decision to cancel Walk Wisconsin 2020, which was scheduled for June 6, due to the circumstances surrounding the current COVID-19 pandemic.
Canceling the 16th annual event was necessary to follow health and safety guidelines as well as ensure we keep walkers, volunteers, and event staff safe, according to a news release from Active Portage County.
Normally, the first Saturday in June saw a community of walkers from across Wisconsin, the Midwest and the nation head out on the Green Circle Trail. The non-competitive walking event, held annually in conjunction with National Trails Day, was started in 2005 as a way to create a healthier Portage County.
Since then, Walk Wisconsin’s appeal grew well beyond Portage County, welcoming participants from more than 30 states and three countries.
Active Portage County is still hopeful that fall programming will continue as planned, including the Hard Rocks Hiking Challenge on Sept. 19 and Moon Walk Wisconsin, scheduled for Oct. 3. More information can be found at ActivePortageCounty.com.
“Walking is an exercise that can be enjoyed by most ages and ability levels,” said John Jury, Active Portage County board member. “We hope that during these times you find peace enjoying quality time with your family, and still get outside to enjoy some fresh air and a walk, while following the social distancing protocols.”
Volunteers are encouraged to support future fall and winter events and can call 715-344-2556 for more details on how to make a difference.
