While this April 2, 2014 cloud formation, as seen from the Stevens Point Municipal Airport, did not yield a tornado, it brought with it heavy winds and a scary-looking sky. (Photo contributed by Kevin Phillips)

National Weather Service offers free online storm spotter training sessions

Metro Wire Staff

PORTAGE COUNTY — The National Weather Service in Green Bay is offering a series of free, online storm spotter training sessions this November, providing a virtual way for new and experienced weather spotters to hone their skills.

The sessions will be led by a meteorologist from the NWS via GoToMeeting Webinars, offering interactive and live training at no cost. Participants can join from their computers or by using the GoToMeeting app on smartphones or tablets.

The training, which covers severe weather safety, reporting guidelines, and the science behind storm spotting, is split into two types: “Standard” and “Advanced.”

The Standard course provides foundational knowledge for spotters, while the Advanced course offers a more in-depth look at severe weather phenomena. While it’s recommended, the Advanced course doesn’t require prior completion of the Standard course.

Each session runs approximately 45 to 55 minutes. All classes are free and open to both new and veteran spotters. Although each class will cover the same material, attendees are welcome to participate in multiple sessions if desired.

The upcoming schedule includes the following Standard sessions:

  • Tuesday, Nov. 19: 11 a.m. – 12 p.m.
  • Friday, Nov. 22: 7 p.m. – 8 p.m.
  • Saturday, Nov. 23: 7 p.m. – 8 p.m.

To register, participants can click the registration link for their preferred date and time on the NWS Green Bay website.
