‘Murder on Main Street’ tour returns to the downtown

Move over true crime documentaries—Stevens Point has its own murder tour right here in the city.
The Portage County Historical Society is offering a free “Murder on Main Street Tour” on Oct. 18, the anniversary of one of the city’s most brutal murders. Attendees will learn how the city earned its once-nickname, “Shooting Point.”
The tour will be led by PCHS board member Erik McFarland, who also works as a local attorney.
PCHS Director John Harry said the tours are one of the group’s most popular offerings, and previous tours typically brought in over 100 attendees.
“One of the questions we get asked the most is ‘when is the murder tour coming back?’” He said.
The free walking tour starts at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 18, in the parking lot of the County-City Building, 1516 Church St. The tour begins at the Civil War Memorial and ends at the Mathias Mithell Public Square.
Attendees should leave the little ones at home, the organization said, as the subject matter is graphic and not suitable for kids.
The tour will go on rain or shine. A $5 donation is suggested.
The Portage County Historical Society was founded in 1952 to tell the stories of Portage County through education and preservation. It operates four historical sites—Beth Israel Synagogue in Stevens Point, Fire House No. 2 in Stevens Point, Heritage Park in Plover, and the Rising Star Mill in Nelsonville.
The group operates regular tours and other educational programming throughout the year. To learn more go to https://www.pchswi.org.
