Motorcycle crash bookends busy day for Dewey Fire, medics

Dewey firefighters ended a busy Saturday with a serious motorcycle crash that sent two people to a Wausau trauma center.

The crash happened at 10:39 p.m. on County Road DB near North Dubay Drive. It marked the department’s second major emergency of the day, following an early-morning car fire.

The Dewey Fire Department and EMS were dispatched after the crash was initially reported as involving CPR in progress, according to Chief Brian Lepper. A few minutes later, dispatchers advised responding crews that both riders were breathing.

The motorcycle was carrying a man and a woman. At the scene, the female passenger told responders the motorcycle’s rear tire had fallen off before the crash, Lepper said.

Two ambulances from the Stevens Point Fire Department also responded to assist. A medical helicopter was requested but later canceled, and both patients were taken by ground ambulance to a trauma center in Wausau. Responders said both appeared to have suffered serious but non-life-threatening injuries, according to Lepper.

Earlier in the day, Dewey firefighters responded to a fully engulfed car fire on northbound Interstate 39. Crews used Class A foam to extinguish the blaze, and the vehicle was destroyed. No one was injured in that incident.

Authorities have not released the names of the motorcycle riders, and the cause of the crash remains under investigation.
