Mid-State showcases career options for area high schoolers

More than 400 students from four area high schools got a chance to learn about hands-on career opportunities during a special program at Mid-State last week.

Students from SPASH, Auburndale, Loyal, and Neillsville attended the Fall Program Showcase at Mid-State Technical College on March 8. The popular biannual event invites area high school students to experience personal demonstrations of many of the college’s programs and to learn about student services and student life activities.

The Program Showcase allows students the opportunity to meet with current Mid-State students, staff, and program faculty while seeing campus labs and experiencing the hands-on learning that Mid-State offers.

Students were also provided a bingo card of all participating programs with the goal of stopping by as many stations as they could. Students with three or more bingos were entered to win Mid-State prizes and gift cards.

Activities included a radar gun run (Criminal Justice-Studies), learning how to practice CPR on humans and K9 manikins (EMT-Paramedic), identifying and learning the functions of different tools (Industrial Mechanical Technician) and matching codes (Health Information Management/Medical Coding).

Brigitta Altmann-Austin, assistant principal at SPASH, said the program was made available to sophomore students.

“It is so important that we expose students to their options after graduation so they can make the best decision for their post-secondary education and understand what Mid-State can offer for them,” she said.
