Businessman Tim Michels has taken the Republican primary for governor.

Michels, who owns a construction company, took the lead in Tuesday’s partisan primary election. In Portage Co., Michels was still trailing Rebecca Kleefisch at 11 p.m. by a vote of 1,279 to 988. But statewide, Michels took the victory as Kleefisch conceded shortly after 11 p.m.

Michels will face Gov. Tony Evers on the November ballot.

In her concession speech, Kleefisch said, “The fight now is truly against Tony Evers and the liberals who want to take away our way of life.”
