‘Mechanics for Mutts’ raises $6,440 for humane society

STEVENS POINT, Wis. — A family’s backyard conversation has grown into a significant fundraiser benefiting animals in Portage County.

Dave and Anna Harvath, owners of D&D Automotive Services, Inc. in Stevens Point, launched the “Mechanics for Mutts” campaign to support the Humane Society of Portage County. The couple, whose household includes two daughters, three dogs, three cats, and two birds, created the annual fundraiser as a way to give back to the community.

The idea was born from Anna Harvath’s passion for animals, Dave Harvath said.

“She has a soft spot for animals, and this is one way we can give back to the community that has supported us for nearly 30 years,” he said.

Proceeds from oil changes, repairs, and a portion of daily sales during October and early November were donated to the cause. This year’s event raised $6,440.34, bringing the total amount donated since 2009 to over $57,000.

Sherri Galle-Teske, executive director of the Humane Society of Portage County, praised the Harvath family for their dedication.

“Dave Harvath knows the meaning of giving,” Galle-Teske said. “Every fall, he and his family organize the ‘Mechanics for Mutts’ event to benefit the Humane Society. This year’s check totaled $6,440.34. When asked why he supports the animals, Dave said, ‘We believe in the cause, and we love helping the animals.’”

The funds will help provide care for homeless animals in Portage County.
