Mayor makes second plea for public involvement in city government

By Brandi Makuski

Mayor Mike Wiza on Tuesday released a statement seeking public involvement in city government.

Each April, a number of seats on various committees, boards, and commissions come up for reappointment. In his email statement, Wiza said the city has been “actively trying” to get more people involved.

Appointments will become available next month on the Bicycle and Pedestrian Street Safety Commission, Board of Appeals, Historic Preservation and Design Review, Parks Commission, Police and Fire Commission, Transportation Commission, and Tourism Commission.

A full list of appointments, along with a brief description of duties, can be found at stevenspoint.com or by clicking here.

Candidates must be at least 18 years old and a city resident—and have some interest or experience in the oversight topic of the seat for which they are applying.

“We want you to get involved,” Wiza said in his statement. “A desire to help your community is the only prerequisite. You don’t need any special degree or background, just a desire to listen and act on behalf of your city.”

The application should be accompanied by a cover letter explaining any relevant experience or qualifications. The deadline for the applications is April 6.

Last November, Wiza asked interested members of the public to run for City Council seats that were up for re-election in April. Only two of the six available seats have a challenger on next month’s ballot.
