Friends and family will gather to share memories from 11 a.m. until the time of services on Saturday, July 24, 2021, at the Shuda Funeral Chapel, 3200 Stanley St. in Stevens Point, Wisconsin. A Celebration of Life Service for Marilyn will be held at 1 p.m.
Flowers are appreciated, and charitable donations will be made in her memory to St. Jude Children’s Hospital and the Portage County Humane Society.
Marilyn was born January 4, 1949, in Monroe, Mich., the daughter of Claude and Elizabeth (Schroeder) Elliott. She graduated from Monroe High School in 1967 and continued her education at Eastern Michigan University, then Michigan State University, where she received her Bachelor’s degree in Education.
She married John Houghton on March 6, 1971, in Monroe. The couple moved to Moscow, Idaho in 1974 where they had their first child, and to Millinocket, Maine in 1976 where three sons were added to the family.
The family moved to Stevens Point in 1983. After nurturing her young family, Marilyn returned to teaching and taught at Washington School for 18 years “retiring” and moving to Lake DuBay in 2011. She continued to substitute teach over the years but always kept her family as her number one priority.
Marilyn was a water baby at heart and relished watching her children and grandchildren in the lake. Her grandchildren were her pride and joy. Preparing for family celebrations, birthdays, holidays, or any other reasons to come together were passions of hers. She loved tending to her flowers and enjoying the lake with family and others.
After retirement, Marilyn loved spending time with her many friends, especially get-togethers with the lunch group. She had a great group of friends, extending back to early childhood, that continued to stay in contact and create memories.
She is survived by her husband John, and their four children: Jennifer (Lee) Wietrzykowski, Plover; Brian (Jaime) Houghton, Au Train, Mich.; Christopher (Erin) Houghton, Green Bay; Jeffrey (Leah) Houghton, Milwaukee. Seven grandchildren: Tyler, Jacob, Vivian, Finley, Isabel, Penelope, and Scarlett.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her sister Meredith. Marilyn will be missed by all who knew and loved her.
