Man Runs Over Girlfriend in Lake District Dispute

By Brandi Makuski

A Stevens Point man is being charged after allegedly driving over his girlfriend’s leg following an argument at their Lake District home on Dec. 31.

Jason M. Janis, 47, faces an initial charge of hit and run/resulting in an injury following a New Year’s Eve incident on the 3200 block of Dan’s Drive. He was also cited for a first offense of operating while intoxicated.

Police responded to the home shortly before 9 PM after a caller reported a woman had been hit by a truck. The incident reportedly began with a verbal argument before escalating, according to Assistant Police Chief Mike Rottier.

Janis reportedly was intoxicated when he attempted to leave the home for a downtown bar. The victim, a 30-year-old woman, attempted to open the door of his truck to prevent him from driving. As she did so, she slipped on the driveway and fell under the truck, when Janis reportedly drove over her leg as he left.

Rottier said the woman called Janis on his cell phone to inform him she’d been injured.

“Apparently, he told her to call 911 if she was hurt,” Rottier said. “He did not realize he ran her over.”

Janis returned to the home a short time later. He cooperated with law enforcement and was taken into custody without incident, Rottier said.

The woman was transported to Ascension St. Michael’s with non-life-threatening injuries. Her condition was not immediately released.

Janis’ court date has not yet been scheduled.
