PORTAGE COUNTY — The Portage County Sheriff’s Office announced its participation in the nationwide “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” campaign, running Dec. 11 through Jan. 1. The initiative is part of a statewide effort to increase law enforcement patrols to prevent impaired driving during the holiday season.
Portage Co. Sheriff Mike Lukas said the campaign is designed to reduce alcohol-related crashes, which accounted for 5,976 incidents and 159 fatalities in Wisconsin last year.
“This campaign is not about stopping and arresting motorists. It is about saving lives and preventing needless tragedies,” Lukas said in a press release.
The campaign will see increased patrol hours and the deployment of nearly 7,500 officers trained in Advanced Roadside Impaired Driving Enforcement (ARIDE) across the state. Wisconsin also boasts 400 Drug Recognition Experts and 30 high-visibility enforcement task forces.
Drivers are encouraged to plan ahead by designating a sober driver or using alternative transportation. The sheriff’s office urges residents to report suspected impaired drivers by calling 911 and providing detailed information.
“Our goal is to ensure all travelers reach their destinations safely,” Lukas said. The sheriff’s office reminds the public that responsible choices can save lives, especially during the holidays.
