Letter: Reader disappointed as SPASH ditches breast cancer fundraiser
To the Editor-
I recently learned that the SPASH Volleyball program has chosen not to continue with the Diggin’ the Cause effort that for years has helped so many of our community members through the Breast Care Center at Aspirus St Michael’s Hospital.
I am disappointed and heartbroken that after 13 years the event is changing course to support SPASH programs only.
Having been part of the original group that started Diggin’ the Cause back in 2011, this event has been near and dear to my heart. Since it began, the event raised over $150,000 to help breast cancer patients right here in our community. I am so sad to say that the volleyball program is now hosting an event and running it just as Diggin’ the Cause was, but 100 percent of the money raised is staying with SPASH programs.
Please be aware that this event is now NOT a community fundraiser, it is a team fundraiser organized with the same platform previously created for Diggin’ the Cause.
To the Breast Care Center at St. Michael’s Hospital, I am sorry that the volleyball program has now chosen to discontinue its support of your very important mission.
To our community members in need, I am sorry that the platform created all those years ago for your benefit has now been abandoned.
To the SPASH Volleyball program and athletic department, I urge you to resume the Diggin’ the Cause effort and carry on with this incredible tradition.
