To the Editor-

[Dan] Kontos, in his column, “Execute, execute, execute,” which he directs specifically at Roman Catholics because he “cannot stand to watch how you (Catholics) in particular are persecuted by the political left.”

I have been a Roman Catholic for 84 years have not once felt persecuted by the political left. However, in the last 10-15 years I have felt assaulted by the political right’s attacks on unions, teachers, public education, the UW university system, the environment, welfare programs, women’s right to choose, election processes, and its support of the attack on the Capitol to use violence to stop the constitutionally correct transfer of government.

Kontos writes, “You (Catholics) are being called to make the world a better place, and there are few better ways to change the world than to select godly leaders.” His choice of a godly leader is Trump. A godly person is a pious, saintly, humble individual. Trump is full of himself and his fortune and has well documented himself as a fire hose force of profanity, nastiness, and meanness.

To tell Catholics to vote for Trump because of his godliness is beyond laughable.

He uses MAGA spin to paint Harris as less than Christian when she told hecklers yelling “Christ is King” and “Jesus is Lord” that they were at the wrong rally. He left out the part that the group of hecklers screamed several slogans “Jesus is Lord, lies and abortion is a sacrament of Satan” while she was explaining her support of a woman’s right to choose.

It takes an enormous amount of chutzpah to lecture people of a different religion on how their religion tells them to vote. Of course, we can use our religious beliefs to guide us on how to vote, we all do. But the Catholic Church is comprised of conservative, moderate, and liberal Catholics. It is often said all Catholics are cafeteria Catholics, we choose to stress the church dogma that best fits our secular views.

Like Kontos, I cannot stand by without saying something. And I hope I have not offended you.
