Letter: Hold accountable those who approved accessory units

To the Editor-

It is a sad commentary on the people we have selected (by vote, appointment, or employment) when a vote for the very thing that will compromise the future of Stevens Point is chosen over the voice of the majority of people this will impact.

At the meetings of the City Plan Commission and District 8 meeting at St. Paul Methodist Church (August 2021), the people said, “We don’t want any part of this ADU/ACU for the city or, particularly District 8.”

The results of the voting of the April 4 Plan Commission, where 15 outspoken residents cited reasons they should vote “no,” with only three in favor, and the Common Council on April 18, where many spoke against this “pie in the sky dream.”

It tells us just what our city officials think of us. Our city officials fail to listen to us and advocate instead for the very thing that will undermine/erode/weaken our city. In past commentaries, I’ve said “It takes only one person to begin the decline of our city and neighborhoods.” However, we didn’t really know the name of the “said person”.

Now we know the names—multiple people who are standing in line to begin the decline of Stevens Point—and those same people are unwilling to vote for what the citizens of the city of Stevens Point want.

The advocates are Mayor Mike Wiza, Ryan Kernoskey, community development director, and Adam Kuhn, associate planner; Alders: Christianson, Shorr, Zarazua, Dalton, Johnson, Fishler, and Kneebone; and Plan Commission members, Arntsen, Rice, Kneebone, and Wiza.

Now you know who they are. It is time to hold them accountable for anything and everything that has to do with ACU/ADU activities that are detrimental to the city, now, and in the future.
