Letter: Experience is crucial in county exec election
To the Editor-
Now that candidates have made their intentions known regarding the upcoming non-partisan election, it becomes incumbent upon the rest of us to do our homework before casting our votes.
Rather than voting for the candidate with the most yard signs, who attends our church, or is recommended by a relative or co-worker, we should vote for the person who is the most qualified for the job. To determine who is most qualified, we must investigate a candidate’s education, community involvement, past accomplishments, and experience in positions of increasing responsibility.
Jami Gebert, a candidate for county executive, receives high marks on all of the above qualities. After graduating Magna Cum Laude from UWSP, she served several years as former Mayor Gary Wescott’s assistant. Following that experience in local government, she partnered with the Portage County Business Council as the first manager of Stevens Point’s (state initiated) Main Street program.
Since 2010 she has been the executive administrative assistant to the current county executive, which has placed her in the unique position to know and work with state and local municipal government officials, as well as county department heads. Neither of her opponents possess this wealth of experience.
While maintaining a full workload, she has found time to become involved in community projects such as the Stevens Point Area Skate Park, Rotary Club of Greater Portage County, the Children’s Museum, and numerous others.
Please join me and your neighbors in voting for Jami Gebert on February 20.
