Letter: Despite concerns, referendum would give taxpayers greater voice

To the Editor-

Alderman Tom Leek (District 8) would have you think the referendum is a pronouncement for the ruination of the city of Stevens Point. He isn’t even close.

The referendum is a message for the common council that the citizens and tax-paying members of this city that are tired of having a dozen people plot to spend $65 million dollars without the approval of anyone but themselves.

Mr. Leek wants us to think that the citizens can’t make wise decisions and that we will all plot one district against the other. That also is untrue. We want what is best for the city. We are not choosing costly “wants” that suit our agendas. The majority of people only find when there is a vote. Eleven people are not the majority.

When Mr. Leek had a meeting about ADU/ACU buildings at St. Paul Methodist Church in late summer, it was the best-attended meeting of any of the districts in our city. And everyone had the same opinion: no to ADU/ACUs; yet, the city planner is still trying to make ADUs/ACUs the next best thing since sliced bread.

The people of our city are tired of a handful of people trying to “redo” the city in its entirety. The city officials/alders do not listen to the people who live here. When did God give them the right to a takeover of unprecedented proportion? Scare tactics are not going to work.
