Letter: Constituent ‘no longer trusts’ council, thinks recall is in order
To the Editor-
Fellow city residents: how much longer are you willing to be second-class citizens and tolerate city council members who thumb their noses at us?
What will it take before enough of us realize a majority of the council must be recalled or replaced because it does not represent their constituents and does not listen to the wishes of voters?
I don’t know about any of you but I no longer trust this group of people to represent me!
In May, a packed public meeting was host to a lot of public sentiment against a road diet on Stanley. Similar sentiments have been voiced by the mayor and the public works director, both who say a road diet isn’t necessary, and the public works director said publicly on many occasions that there isn’t any identified need in either safety or functionality where a road diet would benefit that street.
Despite this, and despite two years of public remarks being overwhelmingly against the idea, the council already had their minds made up long ago. Based on their Facebook pages—which are loaded with pro-road diet arguments from various PhDs and cities in others areas—these people have been grasping for any straw they can to support their opinion. When the city’s public works director didn’t support the need for the road diet, the city council searched for another one who would. Shame on them!
When elected officials vote to install a “wish” instead of a “need” based on his or her own opinion, with no supporting evidence and contrary to public wish, then we have a serious problem. I don’t know if you’d call this despotism, but it sure as heck isn’t a representative democracy.
Remember in April, these people work for us!
