Letter: Claims that referendum will bring 40% tax increase are suspicious

To the Editor-

There have been a lot of statements regarding taxes going up if you vote yes on August 9, 2022.

I would like to say a few words. First, if you watch Mayor Mike Wiza’s video called Talking Point, our mayor said taxes are not likely to go down. He said nothing about taxes going up 40 percent if the referendum passes.

I contacted Corey Ladick, Stevens Point Comptroller/Treasurer. This is what he said: “I am not sure how someone came up with 40 percent, but I can tell you that they didn’t get it from me. I have not made a projection on how passage of the referendum would impact taxes, because it would require a lot of speculation in terms of which project/designs would pass or not pass if they were put to referendum, which is something that we really don’t know.”

If the referendum passes or fails taxes are not going down, but they are not going up 40 percent as some people are saying.
