Portage County — A 39-year-old woman was sentenced Friday to two years in prison for slapping a baby she was babysitting.

Lorene Borntreger was charged with child abuse/intentionally causing harm and physical abuse of a child in 2022. The second charge was dismissed as part of a plea deal reached in March with the Portage Co. District Attorney’s Office.

She will also serve two years of extended supervision following her release. Borntreger was sentenced on May 24.

Investigators said Borntreger admitted to losing her temper and striking the child, who was under a year old, in December 2022. She initially told the child’s mother that the injuries were caused by a fall, but later confessed to the assault.

Medical professionals confirmed that the bruises on the child’s face were consistent with the shape of a human hand, according to the complaint.
