Joan Schunke, 82

Joan Schunke, née Keener, age 82, of Antigo, died on Aug. 17, 2024, at Rosalia Gardens Assisted Living.

Born Oct. 25, 1941, in Amherst, she was the daughter of Sidney Keener and Helen (née Yopek) Lewis. She married Gerald Schunke on Aug. 21, 1965, at St. Stanislaus Catholic Church in Stevens Point.

Mrs. Schunke was a graduate of Amherst High School, class of 1959, and continued her education at the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh. She taught at Antigo High School and North Central Technical College for 34 years.

A member of St. John Catholic Parish, Mrs. Schunke served as a lector and was a past parish council president.

She was a hospital volunteer in both Antigo and Tucson, Arizona, and also volunteered for the United Way as a campaign chairman. She was involved in the Antigo Community Theater and served as a counselor at the Lions Camp in Rosholt.

Mrs. Schunke enjoyed golfing, basket-making, and crocheting.

Survivors include her husband, Gerald; a daughter, Kristen (Christopher) Pfaller of Minocqua; a son, John Schunke of Minocqua; grandchildren, Connor and Carson Schunke; step-granddaughter, Breia Tlusty; step-great-grandchildren, Willa and Olly; a brother, John (Sandra) Keener of Amherst; and a nephew, Nathan (Amanda) Keener.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Kali.

A funeral Mass will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 22, at St. John Catholic Church with the Rev. Charles Hoffmann and the Rev. Robert Thorn concelebrating. Visitation will be from 10 to 11 a.m. Thursday at the church in Hoffmann Hall.
