Jeanette A. Karlen (nee Lutz), 94

Jeanette A. Karlen (nee Lutz), 94, of Stevens Point passed away peacefully on Feb. 2, 2018 at Portage County Health Care.

A Memorial Mass will be celebrated at 11 AM on Saturday, Feb. 10, 2018 at Holy Spirit Parish, 838 Fremont St., Stevens Point. Father Tom Lindner will officiate. Burial will follow at St. Stephen’s Catholic Cemetery. Visitation will be from 9 AM until the time of services at Holy Spirit Parish.

Jeanette was born April 13, 1923 at the home of her parents Irwin and Verona Lutz on Church Street in Stevens Point. Jeanette graduated from St. Joseph Catholic School and later from P.J. Jacobs High School in 1941. After high school, she was employed as a telephone operator at Wisconsin Bell Telephone Co.

Jeanette married Edwin H. Karlen on September 12, 1942 in Stevens Point. The couple set up housekeeping in Fremont, Wis., where Ed worked as a cheesemaker. Later they lived in Pulaski, Wis. where Jeanette took a job clerking in a grocery store and Ed worked as a cheesemaker until he was inducted into the Army.

While Edwin was in the Army, Jeanette moved to Evanston, Ill. where she waited tables at Cooley’s Kitchen. At the time food was rationed and in high demand. After the war ended Jeanette returned to Stevens Point where the couple reunited and Ed began his career at Citizens National Bank.

In 1951 Jeanette and Ed began their family and Jeanette became a fulltime homemaker, a life’s work she truly loved. In high school one of her favorite classes was home economics and it surely showed, as Jeanette was an excellent cook, baker and seamstress.

Jeanette was a loving wife, mother and friend to many. She was a self-taught pianist and organist and loved creating medleys and playing favorite songs, and has passed on her love of beauty and the arts to her family. She enjoyed occasional travel with her husband and truly enjoyed visits and time with her dear children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. She volunteered with various community groups including Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts and Meals on Wheels.

Jeanette was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 68 years, a daughter Mary, and an infant son John, as well as by her parents and a sister Norma Fleihr. Her living family members include two sons, Paul, Waukesha, and Thomas (Annette Glodowski), Stevens Point; two daughters Nancy (David Brosemann), Orofino, Idaho, and Joan (Jack Hurrish), Stevens Point; and daughter in law Candace Sturtz Karlen. She is further survived by six grandchildren, Andrew, Las Vegas, John (Margaret) Chicago, Anna Petersen, Ottawa, Ontario, Emily Petersen, Brooklyn, NY, Jacklyn (Taylor Heinlein), St. Paul, Minn., and Rubia (Mitch) Ryce, Stevens Point; four great-grandchildren and one sister, Leone Ingles.

The family thanks Marcia McDonald and the staff at Portage County Health Care and Heartland Hospice Care for their kindness and generous care. Memorials in Jeanette’s honor may be made to Holy Spirit Parish and Pacelli Catholic Schools.
