James “Jim” D. Girling, 55
James “Jim” D. Girling, of Stevens Point, died peacefully on April 28, 2025, at the age of 55.
Jim was born Feb. 23, 1970, in Baraboo, Wisconsin, son of Duane and Sharon (née Girling) Peterson. He grew up in the area, attended local schools, and graduated from Kettle Moraine High School in 1988.
He earned a Master of Business Administration degree from UW-Whitewater and worked as a maintenance engineer for a large hotel chain. Jim enjoyed carpentry and home renovation projects, and was known for being able to fix just about anything. A hard worker from a young age, Jim valued saving and investing in quality, a lesson he often shared through stories about his childhood.
An avid outdoorsman, Jim found peace in nature and enjoyed fishing, boating, kayaking, hiking and traveling. One of his favorite trips was a biking adventure to Moab, Utah, following college graduation. Some of his most cherished memories were fishing with his Grandpa Jim, a role model and source of great pride.
Jim had a deep connection with his family, especially his mother, Sharon, and was proud of his siblings. He was also grateful for the role his stepfather, Duane, played in his life. Above all, Jim was devoted to his children—Emma (Sean), Markus, and Shawn. He was proud of their growth and accomplishments, and their bond was one of the most meaningful parts of his life.
Jim was a gracious, hardworking man with a quick wit and approachable nature. He made friends easily, brought smiles to others, and had a gift for conversation. He will be remembered as a beloved father, son, uncle, brother, friend, and fishing partner.
He is survived by his children, Emma (Sean), Markus and Shawn Girling; his parents, Duane and Sharon; his girlfriend, Carol Colby; his siblings, Laura Peterson (Chris), Dale Peterson (Melissa), Donna Laughlin (Kevin), Jill Munger (Gary), and Amanda “Kennedy” Hindenach (Brian); a niece, Jenna Laughlin; a nephew, Josh Peterson; and Carol’s son, David.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents, James “Jim” and Genevieve; a brother-in-law, Trace Munger; and his aunt, Karen Beardsley.
A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, May 23, 2025, at Shuda Funeral Chapel, 3200 Stanley St., Stevens Point. Visitation will begin at 1 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Jim’s name to Habitat for Humanity (https://www.centralwisconsinhabitat.org/donations), or directly to the family.
