Humane Society of Portage County earns top national honors for transparency, accountability
PLOVER — The Humane Society of Portage County has earned national recognition for its transparency and operational excellence, landing in the top 0.1% of U.S. nonprofit organizations.
The shelter announced Monday it received a 94 out of 100 rating from Charity Navigator, securing the organization a coveted Four-Star status. It also earned the Platinum Seal of Transparency from Candid, the highest recognition available from the nonprofit tracker formerly known as Guidestar.
“This recognition reflects our unwavering commitment to responsible stewardship of donor resources and transparent operations,” said Sherri Galle-Teske, executive director of the shelter.
Charity Navigator ratings above 90 are considered “Great” and indicate a nonprofit that exceeds industry standards and outperforms most charities in its field, according to the organization’s website.
Candid’s Platinum Seal is awarded to fewer than 1% of the roughly 1.7 million nonprofits in its database. The designation signifies that an organization shares detailed data about its goals, strategies, capabilities and measurable results.
“These prestigious recognitions reflect the dedication of our entire team—our staff, volunteers, board members and generous supporters throughout the community,” Galle-Teske said. “We remain committed to maintaining the highest standards of excellence and transparency as we continue our vital work for the animals of Portage County.”
Founded in 1969, the Humane Society of Portage County operates from 3200 Iber Lane in Plover. The shelter cares for more than 200 animals at a time and provides animal control services, rescue operations, and adoption placements throughout the county.
