St. Peter’s Catholic Church turns 121 years old on Dec. 19.
One of the oldest churches in the city is celebrating the anniversary of its 1897 dedication on Wednesday. According to the Portage Co. Historical Society’s website, the church was first constructed, at a cost of about $3,000, for a largely Polish parish in August 1876 but was destroyed in an 1896 fire.
The new church was constructed for $15,150 the following year and was blessed and dedicated that December. Today, the church has almost 800 members and over a dozen ministries.
The church holds an annual picnic and Polish and Indian dinners every year.
