Portage County Guns and Hoses is easing back into action during COVID-19, skipping its softball game this year in favor of a cookout event.

The Portage Co. Sheriff’s Office, police departments in Stevens Point and Plover, and the Stevens Point Fire Department will come together on Saturday, Aug. 7, to host a cookout at the Pfiffner Pioneer Bandshell.

The event will be held from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and include an emergency vehicle display and kids games, according to Sheriff Mike Lukas. Attendees can purchase a hamburger or brat, with chips and a drink, for $5.

Proceeds will benefit the Portage County Allied Veteran Council Veterans Relief Fund, which goes to help local veterans in need of financial assistance. All the money stays local, Lukas said.

Guns N’ Hoses has raised $130,000 for the Never Forgotten Honor Flight, the Portage Co. Veterans Emergency Services Fund, and other local veteran causes since 2014.
