Gas leak caused by construction near Fifth & Union

Metro Wire Staff

Stevens Point firefighters on Monday were called to a gas leak near Union St. and Fifth Ave.

Wisconsin Public Service crews called 911 after a two-inch gas line was ruptured near the intersection at about 2:30 p.m. on May 20.

Emergency vehicles were staged as far north as the Maria Dr. intersection of Union.

Capt. Paul Mattlin from the Stevens Point Fire Department said two homes were evacuated but no one suffered any injuries.

Construction crews and workers from WPS were already on site, as the road is being reconstructed as part of the city’s 2019 capital improvements.

“When we pulled up on the scene, they were crimping [the gas line],” Mattlin said. “So, fortunately, it wasn’t too bad.”

SPFD was released from the scene by WPS after about 38 minutes.
