STEVENS POINT — Contemporary works by University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point assistant art professor Andy Gambrell are on display at the Edna Carlsten Art Gallery as part of the exhibit “WISCONTEMPORARY,” open now through Dec. 5.

Gambrell, whose work has been featured in more than 90 exhibitions across the U.S. and internationally, has pieces in private collections in Canada, Colombia, Switzerland, Germany, Hong Kong, and New Zealand.

His artistic style was shaped by years in Miami among abstract painters, including modern masters Jules Olitski and Darby Bannard. Gambrell’s contemporary approach renews American abstract painting through a unique process involving an eye-tracking viewfinder he developed. The tool allows him to create digital drawings that trace his eye movements across Wisconsin landscapes, translating these paths into abstract paintings.

The exhibit blends inspirations from Arizona wilderness to Wisconsin fields, offering what Gambrell describes as a fresh, celebratory take on the American landscape.

The Edna Carlsten Art Gallery is located on the second floor of the Noel Fine Arts Center, 1800 Portage St. The exhibit is free and open to the public.
