Firefighters plan first charity golf fundraiser

STEVENS POINT — Local firefighters are taking their commitment to serving the community from the firehouse to the fairway.
The Stevens Point Fire Fighters Charitable Foundation will host its first-ever charity golf outing on Friday, Aug. 28, with proceeds helping provide new winter coats to children across Portage County through its Operation Warm – Coats for Kids campaign.
The fundraiser will be held at Glacier Wood Golf Club in Iola and will feature an 18-hole, four-person scramble. Registration begins at 9 a.m., followed by a 10 a.m. shotgun start. The day will wrap up with raffles and dinner.
Organizers hope to raise enough money to purchase more than 400 new winter coats for elementary school students in Portage County while also supporting other charitable efforts through the foundation.
“We are incredibly excited to host our first annual charity golf fundraiser,” said Jason Pettis, director of the Stevens Point Fire Fighters Charitable Foundation and a firefighter with the Stevens Point Fire Department. “It’s a fantastic opportunity to golf and raise money for Portage County children in need.”
Pettis said every golfer who signs up and every business that sponsors the event helps the foundation continue assisting local individuals, families and organizations facing hardship, unexpected loss, disasters and other difficult situations.
The cost is $400 per foursome and includes green fees, a cart, on-course contests, door prizes and a post-tournament meal.
Businesses interested in supporting the event can choose from several sponsorship opportunities, including hole, flag, lunch, beverage cart, dinner and event sponsorships.
The Stevens Point Fire Fighters Charitable Foundation was established in 2015 by current and retired members of Stevens Point Professional Fire Fighters IAFF Local 484 after firefighters saw a growing need for charitable assistance in the community. Since then, the nonprofit has donated more than $189,000 to local causes.
Operation Warm is a national nonprofit that partners with organizations across the country to provide brand-new winter coats and other essential clothing to children in need.
