‘Every Step Counts’ fitness challenge aims to raise funds for the homeless

STEVENS POINT — A month-long community fitness challenge to benefit local residents experiencing homelessness will kick off May 1, culminating in a group walk and celebration at the end of the month.
Organized by the Bread of Life Hope Center of Portage County, a program of The Salvation Army, the “Every Step Counts, Walk a Mile in Their Shoes” fundraiser encourages participants to set personal fitness goals and collect pledges from sponsors for every mile walked.
The challenge runs through May 30. Participants can walk individually or as part of a team, setting their own targets in miles, steps, or hours of activity. Proceeds raised through sponsorships will benefit individuals and families in need across the community.
“This event not only brings us together but also allows us to enjoy exercising while supporting those who are less fortunate,” said Amanda Phillip, special events coordinator at the Bread of Life Hope Center. “Did you know the average person experiencing homelessness walks, on average, 5 to 10 miles per day?”
The event will wrap up with a celebration from 10 a.m. to noon on Saturday, May 31, at Stevens Point Brewery, 2617 Water St. The final walk will be followed by food, conversation, recognition of accomplishments, and gift giveaways for participants.
Businesses supporting the event include Stevens Point Brewery, Ford Chiropractic, Kwik Trip, Knight Barry Title, and others.
