Local law enforcement will be participating in the annual “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” campaign beginning on Wednesday.
Area officers will be putting additional resources on the road to watch for intoxicated drivers.
The campaign started on Wednesday and runs through Sept. 5, according to a press release from the Portage Co. Sheriff’s Office.
In 2021, Wisconsin had 6,368 alcohol-related crashes that resulted in 140 deaths, or, about one-quarter of all traffic fatalities.
“This campaign is not about stopping and arresting motorists. It’s about saving lives and preventing needless tragedies during the holiday season,” Sheriff Mike Lukas said in the release. “We need all drivers to make smart and responsible decisions.”
During the campaign, Wisconsin will have 6,382 police officers trained in Advance Roadside Impaired Driving Enforcement (ARIDE) to help detect and remove impaired drivers, and 365 highly-trained Drug Recognition Experts—among the nation’s most.
Motorists are urged to use a sober designated driver or arrange for another safe way home.
