Dr. Edwin George May, 87

Dr. Edwin George May, 87, of the Town of Hull, passed away on Nov. 26, 2024, at Aspirus Stevens Point Hospital after a courageous battle with cancer.

Dr. May was born on Nov. 22, 1937, in Chicago, Ill., to the late Edwin and Lillian (née Nape) May. He graduated from St. George High School in 1955 and later attended the University of Notre Dame, where he earned his undergraduate degree in 1959.

He went on to graduate from the Stritch School of Medicine at Loyola University in Chicago in 1963. Shortly before graduation, he married Phyllis Kolleng on Nov. 17, 1962. The couple celebrated 62 years of marriage.

Dr. May completed his medical internship and residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology at Cook County Hospital in Chicago, with additional clinical staff appointments at Northwestern University. He served in the U.S. Air Force from 1968 to 1970 before beginning his career at Rice Clinic in Stevens Point, where he worked with Dr. John Riordan.

Over time, the practice expanded to include six practitioners, and Dr. May held leadership roles as President of Rice Clinic, Chief of Medical Staff, and Chief of Surgery. He also served on several boards, including the St. Michael’s Hospital Foundation Board, the Stevens Point YMCA Board, and the Community Foundation Board.

Dr. May retired from his medical practice in 2002, but remained active in sports. He enjoyed golfing, skiing, swimming, and biking. He was also involved in the U.S. Masters Swimming Program and was a member of the Granite Peak Ski Patrol for five years.

He loved teaching others, particularly in swimming, and never lost his competitive spirit, often saying, “At my age, there’s less and less competition. So as long as you hang in there, your chances of winning get better and better!”

Dr. May will be remembered not only for his accomplishments but also for his sense of humor, kindness, and genuine care for his family, friends, coworkers, and patients.

He is survived by his wife, Phyllis; their four children, Beverly (Joe) Hicks of Hinsdale, Ill., Michael (Holly) May of Mequon, Wis., Karen (Dan) Weeks of Mercer Island, WA, and Lynette (Scott) Terhune of Wauwatosa, Wis.; and 10 grandchildren.

The family would like to express their gratitude to the doctors and nurses at Aspirus Stevens Point Hospital and Cancer Center for their exceptional care.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Dr. May’s honor to Holy Spirit Parish, 2151 Stanley St., Stevens Point, Wis. 54481, or the Stevens Point Area YMCA Foundation, 1000 Division St., Stevens Point, WI 54481.
