DOT releases this week’s road construction update

The Wisconsin Department of Transportation provides weekly road construction updates for Adams, Green Lake, Florence, Forest, Iron, Langlade, Lincoln, Marathon, Marquette, Menominee, Oneida, Portage, Price, Shawano, Vilas, Waupaca, Waushara, and Wood counties.

Waushara County

Highway: WIS 21
Location: Coloma to Wautoma
Schedule: March 27, 2023 to October 2023
Project description: Construction will consist of replacing the asphalt, improving safety at the intersection of County B by lowering the roadway and cutting into a nearby hill, shoulder widening, guardrail replacement, curb and gutter replacement, and culvert replacement and installation.
Anticipated work scheduled: Work scheduled includes:

  • Crews will continue installing culvert pipes along WIS 21 and residential driveways.
  • Crews will continue grading work of the slopes along WIS 21.
  • Crews will continue to place topsoil behind the grading operations.

Highway: I-39
Location: Marquette County Line to County O
Schedule: April 10 to Oct. 27, 2023
Project description: The Wisconsin Department of Transportation will be making improvements to I-39 in Waushara County including:

  • Resurfacing the highway
  • Reconstructing deteriorated underpasses and bridge approach slabs
  • Repairing deteriorated pipes
  • Replacing guard rail
  • Install edge line rumble strips

Anticipated work scheduled: Crews will pave in the left lane at the County C, County V and County O reconstruct areas. Crews will mill and pave the left lane in the south closure (Marquette County line to just north of WIS 21 on ramp) with shouldering to follow. When shouldering is complete, pavement marking and rumble strip installation will be begin.
Traffic impacts: Motorists can expect two single lane closures on I-39 northbound throughout the length of the project:

  • The first single lane closure will be a left lane closure from the Marquette County line to just north of the WIS 21 on ramp. Traffic will be shifted onto the right lane shoulder. No ramp closures are planned.
  • The second single lane closure will be a left lane closure from County C to just north of County O. Lanes will also be shifted onto the right lane shoulder at times. No ramp closures are planned.

Highway: I-39
Location: County O to the Portage County Line
Schedule: April 24, 2023 – June 9, 2023
Project description: Crews will remove existing asphalt pavement and place new asphalt pavement. Additional work will include updating the guardrail, placing shoulder gravel, adding shoulder rumble strips and placing new pavement marking.
Anticipated work scheduled: Crews will be repave the section of Archer Avenue driving lane. Traffic will be switched to a right lane closure by the end of the week. There will be a single lane closure running from Portage county line to 1.3 miles south of Archer Avenue.
Traffic impacts: Motorists can expect a single lane closure with a reduced speed limit of 55 mph.

Marquette County

Highway: I-39 northbound
Location: Columbia County Line to Waushara County Line
Schedule: June 20, 2022 to June 7, 2023
Project description: Crews will resurface the highway, repair deteriorated inlets and pipes, replace guard rail, and install rumble strips.
Anticipated work scheduled: Crews will work on repairing guardrail, fencing and installing permanent cross overs.
Traffic impacts: Single-lane closures are possible throughout the project northbound as construction requires while crews finish up pavement markings and miscellaneous work from May 15 through May 19. Closure day and times will depend on contractor availability.

Marathon County

Highway: WIS 29
Location: Eastbound County E to County H, Edgar
Schedule: April 10, 2023 to Oct. 31, 2023
Project description: Crews will repair existing concrete pavement and resurface the asphalt shoulders on WIS 29 eastbound.
Anticipated work scheduled: Work scheduled includes:

  • Continue constructing WIS 29 median temporary cross overs

Traffic impacts:

  • WIS 29 eastbound left lane is closed
    • County E south to WIS 97
    • At Pet Brook bridge until May 19
  • WIS 29 westbound left lane closed until May 19 at Pet Brook bridge and from Pioneer Road to Silver Leaf Road May 8 to May 26

Highway: WIS 13
Location: County N in the city of Colby to Pine Street in the city of Abbotsford
Schedule: April 24 to July 20, 2023
Project description: The Wisconsin Department of Transportation will be resurfacing WIS 13 from Colby to Abbotsford along with replacing non-complaint curb ramps in along the project.
Anticipated work scheduled: Crews will continue working on curb ramp replacements between Oak Street in Abbotsford and Park Street in Colby working north to south.
Traffic impacts: Northbound WIS 13 will have the outside lane closed from East Monroe Street in Colby to Pine Street in Abbotsford. Southbound WIS 13 will have the outside lane closed from Pine Street in Abbotsford to East Monroe Street in Colby. A temporary traffic lane shift was put into place in Colby between East Monroe Street and Marathon Street. The lane shift was necessary for the city of Colby to reconstruct their watermain line. In this area both northbound and southbound traffic are shifted to the southbound lanes of WIS 13. This traffic shift is expected to remain in place until May 19.

Highway: WIS 153
Location: WIS 13 to Stainless Ave, Stratford
Schedule: mid April to mid August
Project description: The Wisconsin Department of Transportation will be improving WIS 153 between WIS 13 and Stratford including resurfacing the road and replacing culverts and guardrail.
Anticipated work scheduled: Crews will continue installing culverts and replacing masonry endwalls. Crews will begin paving asphalt at culvert replacements and will install permanent erosion control devices for culverts.
Traffic impacts: WIS 153 will be closed to through traffic starting May 1 for approximately four weeks for installation of culverts. Traffic will be detoured via WIS 13 and WIS 97.  During this closure local and emergency vehicle access will be maintained.  This access will require use of local roads and will change as culverts at different locations are replaced.

Highway: WIS 107
Location: North Street and Maratech Avenue, Marathon City
Schedule: May 1 to end of August 2023
Project description: The Wisconsin Department of Transportation will be repaving portions of WIS 107 and repairing the bridges over Big Rib River.
Anticipated work scheduled: Crews will finish forming and pour joints, grading and removals for the new guardrail  and start the new sidewalk extension.
Traffic impacts: WIS 107 from North Street to Maratech Avenue will be reduced to one lane of traffic in each direction. The construction zone will be signed for 9’ max wide loads throughout the project. Pedestrian traffic will be maintained to the Lions Riverside Park.

Portage County

Highway: I-39/US 10/WIS 66
Location: US 10 bridge over I-39, southbound I-39 ramp to Wildwood Drive, Country Club Drive intersection, Stevens Point
Schedule: April 4, 2022, to May 2023
Project description: Crews will replace the bridge deck on the US 10/WIS 66 bridge over I-39. Bridge work includes relocating the sidewalk to the median area and adding concrete barrier walls to protect the median walkway area.
Anticipated work scheduled: Continue bridge repainting operations over I-39 northbound and southbound outside lanes.

Traffic impacts:

  • Pedestrian traffic:
    • None
  • Motorists can expect: I-39 northbound right lane will be closed April 10 to May 18 with speeds reduced to 60 mph. I-39 southbound right exit lane will be closed April 10 to May 18 with speeds reduced to 60 mph. US 10 /WIS 66 right lane closure from Country Club Drive intersection to Maple Bluff Road intersection from May 10 to May 18.

Highway: I-39/US 10/WIS 66
Location: US 10 bridge over I-39, southbound I-39 ramp to Wildwood Drive, Country Club Drive intersection, Stevens Point
Schedule: April 4, 2022, to May 2023
Project description: Crews will replace the bridge deck on the US 10/WIS 66 bridge over I-39. Bridge work includes relocating the sidewalk to the median area and adding concrete barrier walls to protect the median walkway area.
Anticipated work scheduled: Crews will finish bridge repainting over I-39 north and southbound inside lanes. Crews will close and detour I-39 southbound off ramp to US 10 to complete storm sewer replacement and bridge polymer overlay. Crews will close US 10 westbound and WIS 66 eastbound right lanes to complete bridge polymer overlay. I-39 north and southbound and US 10/WIS 66 pavement markings will be installed, and temporary barrier will be removed on I-39 north and southbound.
Traffic impacts: I-39 northbound right lane will be closed April 10 to May 18 with speeds reduced to 60 mph. I-39 southbound right exit lane will be closed April 10 to May 18 with speeds reduced to 60 mph. US 10 /WIS 66 right lane closure from Country Club Drive intersection to Maple Bluff Road intersection from May 10 to May 18. I-39 southbound off ramp to US 10  will be closed and detoured May 15 to May 18.

Highway: I-39
Location: US 10 bridge over I-39, southbound I-39 ramp to Wildwood Drive, Country Club Drive intersection, Stevens Point
Schedule: April 4, 2022, to May 2023
Project description: Crews will replace the bridge deck on the US 10/WIS 66 bridge over I-39. Bridge work includes relocating the sidewalk to the median area and adding concrete barrier walls to protect the median walkway area.
Anticipated work scheduled: Continue bridge repainting operations over I-39 northbound and southbound outside lanes. Replace cracked concrete, pour sidewalk median and complete crack sealing and repair guard rail on I-39 northbound on ramp.

    • None
  • Motorists can expect:
    • I-39 northbound lane will be closed April 10 to May 5.
    • I-39 southbound right exit lane will be closed April 10 to May 5.
    • US 10 westbound left lane closure from Maple Bluff Road to I-39 southbound on ramp from April 17 to April 28.
    • I-39 northbound on ramp closed with detour May 1 to May 4

Highway: I-39
Location: County B interchange and I-39 bridges over the railroad north of the interchange
Schedule: March 14, 2022 – June 15, 2023
Project description: Crews will remove existing asphalt pavement and place new asphalt pavement. Additional work will include updating the guardrail, placing shoulder gravel, adding shoulder rumble strips and placing new pavement marking.
Anticipated work scheduled: Crews will install guard rail on the inside lanes of I-39, replace pavement marking on I-39 and off ramps to County B and grade around the bridges over County B.
Traffic impacts: Inside lanes of southbound and northbound I-39 are closed approximately 0.5 miles north and south of County B. Starting May 17, the lane closures for northbound and southbound I-39 will be switched to the outside lanes.

Highway: I-39
Location: Waushara County line to Birch Drive
Schedule: August 2022 – May 2023
Project description: Crews will remove existing asphalt pavement and place new asphalt pavement. Additional work will include updating the guardrail, placing shoulder gravel, adding shoulder rumble strips and placing new pavement marking.
Anticipated work scheduled: Crews will finish replacing the centerline skips along the entire job and begin replacing ramp markings.
Traffic impacts: Motorists can expect a single lane closure for the length of the job (12.7 miles) with a reduced speed limit of 55 mph.

 *NEW* Highway: I-39 northbound
Location: Portage County line to Maple Ridge Road
Schedule: August 2022 – May 2023
Project description: Crews will resurface I-39 northbound, WIS 34 northbound ramps and WIS 153 northbound ramps with two inches of new asphalt pavement, replace guardrail, perform culvert and drainage maintenance, and replace select permanent signs. Additionally, the existing pavement at the I-39 northbound/WIS 34 ramp intersection will be replaced with 6 ½ inches of new asphalt pavement.
Anticipated work scheduled: Crews will resume work that wasn’t completed last fall. Crews will be completing fence installation, project wide restoration, replacing signs, removing beam guard currently protecting a light at Central Wisconsin Airport and reshaping that shoulder.
Traffic impacts: One lane of northbound I-39 will be closed from May 15 at 6 am to May 19 at noon.

Oneida County

Highway: WIS 17
Location: US 8 to Stevens Street, Rhinelander
Schedule: April 17 to October 2023
Project description: Crews will replace the curb and gutter and asphalt pavement for the highway. The sidewalk along the west side of WIS 17 will be widened from 5-feet to 10-feet and curb ramps will be replaced. The island at the southwest corner of the Timber Drive intersection will be removed and replaced with a right turn lane.
Anticipated work scheduled: Crews will begin removing asphalt, and curb and gutter in the two southbound lanes. Intersections will be gapped and worked on at a later date.
Traffic impacts: Motorists can expect closures to one lane in each direction. Crews will be shutting down the inside lane of WIS 17 in each direction from Lincoln Street to Eisenhower Street. To the north, motorists can expect to run into short durations of flagging at remaining intersections along with short durations of lane closures. Next week, motorists can expect traffic to shift to the northbound lanes with one-lane of traffic in each direction.

Highway: US 8
Location: County P to US 45 North
Schedule: May 1 to May 31
Project description: The project will consist of repaving the road, culvert replacements, pavement marking and other miscellaneous items.
Anticipated work scheduled: Crews will mill existing travel lanes, place new asphalt surface on travel lanes and placement of new gravel on shoulders.
Traffic impacts: Motorists will encounter single lane closures. Traveling public may encounter uneven lanes, and multiple work areas within the project limits.

Highway: WIS 32
Location: Julia Creek Culvert
Schedule: May 1 to May 25
Project description: This is a culvert replacement project at various locations along WIS 32 in Three Lakes and Hiles.
Anticipated work scheduled: Crews to form and pour the endwalls for the culvert pipe replacement at Julia Creek.
Traffic impacts: WIS 32 will be closed for the culvert replacement at Julia Creek beginning Monday May 8, 2023. Traffic will be detoured via US 8 and US 45.

Highway: US 51
Location: Lake Katherine Bridge
Schedule: May 1 to Aug. 30, 2023
Project description: This project is a bridge rehabilitation for the bridge on US 51 over the Lake Katherine crossing, in the town of Hazelhurst in Oneida County.
Anticipated work scheduled: Crews will work on surface repair on the north and south bridge abutment and stripping deck forms while the overlay is curing out. Crews will work on removing the north and south approach area. Crews will grade and pour the northeast and southeast concrete approaches. Crews will pave early in the week.
Traffic impacts: Motorists will encounter single lane traffic with temporary traffic signals.
