Door2Dreams names inaugural executive director

STEVENS POINT — Door2Dreams has hired its first executive director, a significant step for the nonprofit as it prepares to break ground on its long-planned community for adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities later this summer.

Theresa Christianson joined the organization on June 1 and will oversee daily operations, fundraising, community partnerships and long-term planning.

The hire comes as Door2Dreams enters a critical phase of development. The organization recently announced it has raised more than $4.1 million toward its $4.5 million fundraising goal for the Berard Gathering Lodge and remains on track to begin construction in August.

Christianson brings more than 20 years of experience working with people with disabilities through residential and day services programs. She also has a background in mental health services, experience she said aligns closely with the organization’s mission.

“I’m excited to help bring something groundbreaking to Central Wisconsin,” Christianson said. “The work that Door2Dreams is doing will help Stevens Point stand out and provide important support to the families of adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities.”

The Berard Gathering Lodge will serve as the centerpiece of the future Door2Dreams community. Plans call for an inclusive residential development designed to provide housing, community spaces and support services for adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

Door2Dreams Board President Karen Medo said bringing on the organization’s first executive director reflects the momentum the project has gained in recent years.

“We are thrilled to welcome Theresa to Door2Dreams,” Medo said. “This organization has reached an exciting point, and we are confident she will help lead Door2Dreams into its next chapter.”

Founded to address the growing need for housing and support options for adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities, Door2Dreams aims to create a community centered on independence, connection and opportunity for residents and their families.
