PLOVER — A lost chicken is safe and waiting for its owner after being found Tuesday in a busy shopping area in the Village of Plover.

The chicken was found Jan. 6 in the Walmart parking lot near Crossroads Drive and Commons Circle and is now being cared for at the Humane Society of Portage County. Shelter staff have given the bird the temporary name “Hen Stefani.”

The shelter is deliberately limiting identifying details to ensure the chicken is returned to the correct owner, said executive director Sherri Galle-Teske. The full lost-and-found listing, including reclaim information, is available on the humane society’s website.

Anyone who believes the chicken may belong to them is asked to call the shelter directly at 715-344-6012.

Under state law, all stray animals are held for a mandatory four-day period. If the chicken is not reclaimed during that time, it will be assessed and could become available for adoption.

The shelter said it cannot hold animals for possible adoption and encourages the public to check its website for animals currently available.
