Darlene Haferbecker, 89

Darlene Haferbecker, of Stevens Point, passed away May 19, 2023, at Marshfield Medical Center, at the age of 89.

Darlene was born June 26, 1933, in Chicago, Ill.; a daughter of Edward and Thelma (née Smith) Sterzenbecher. She grew up in the area until she was an adult. After having her son, Barry, she moved to Herrin, Ill. for a few years. The Myers family then moved to Florida and finally to the Rosholt/Stevens Point area, where she remained until her final day.

To support her and Barry, Darlene held various positions; in Chicago she worked for Western Union; in Florida she worked for vocational rehabilitation; and in Wisconsin, she worked for Okray Potatoes before becoming a housewife.

Darlene lived a joyful life with a great sense of humor. She touched a lot of lives in her time here, making many friends along the way, and was loved by them all. She was especially loved by dogs and enjoyed meeting new canine friends. Darlene was a talented artist, especially with pencil sketching. She loved to draw animals and paper dolls. When she had some quiet time, she found joy in reading.

Darlene is survived by her son, Barry (Linda) Myers and his daughter, Lindsey McCune, and her children, Jayden and Jozlyn; a stepson, Jon (Judy) Haferbecker and his children Jay and Jackie Haferbecker-Eckman; and a step-granddaughter, Jenny (Dave) Merila and their two sons, Wyatt and Carter.

Darlene was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Gordon Haferbecker.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, June 24, 2023, from 2-4 p.m. at Shuda Funeral Chapel, 3200 Stanley St., Stevens Point.
