CWSO Gets Jazzy in ‘East Meets West’
For the Metro Wire
The Central Wisconsin Symphony Orchestra is about to get jazzy in a big way.
The CWSO’s Jazz Ensemble will present “East Meets West,” a concert dedicated to jazz composers from the east and west coasts on Saturday, Jan. 6 in Michelsen Hall at the Noel Fine Arts Center, UW-Stevens Point.
According to bandleader Brent Turney, the performances will highlight “unique qualities of jazz greats from both ends of the country”, including Bill Holman, Shorty Rogers, Mary Paich, Stan Kenton, and the Clayton-Hamilton Jazz Orchestra on the west coast, and Thad Jones, Mel Lewis, Maria Schneider, Ted Nash, and Duke Ellington from the east.
The CWJE is a professional 16-piece big band, comprising the best performers in Central and Northern Wisconsin and presenting three concerts per season. Concerts feature a mix of Big Band music, newly-composed works and guest artists. The CWJE is managed by the Central Wisconsin Symphony Orchestra with support from the College of Fine Arts and Communication at UW-Stevens Point. Additional support is from Wisconsin Public Radio, the Wisconsin Arts Board with funds from the State of Wisconsin and the National Endowment for the Arts.
Tickets are $25 in advance or $30 at the door; UW students with ID pay $7 in advance and $10 at the door.
